Home Truths with.... Callum McKenna
In Episode 5 of Home Truths, we hear fromCallum McKenna of Graham Hygiene Services
Can you tell us a little bit about what you do for a living?
I’m the Operations Director for Graham Hygiene Services. I joined the company back a couple of months after the business was established in 2010 and have worked in every role within the business. In the early days, you would see me out scrubbing kitchen extraction systems during the night and then into the office to learn everything about scheduling jobs, customer service and assisting our wonderful clients. My role now consists of having a full overview of everything that is happening day to day, while also visiting our customers and suppliers and ensuring that we are staying compliant with all the services we provide.
What was the first job you ever had?
When I was 14, I started working as a waiter at Blairgowrie Golf Club. Gave me a real confidence boost that I was needing and allowed me to develop a range of skills that I still use to this day.
Who has been the biggest influence on your own career?
My Dad. Without his help and guidance, I’m sure I wouldn’t be where I am now. It can be a challenge working with family but bouncing ideas off each other is something I really enjoy now, even although we might not always agree!
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I have a small apartment out in Spain which I combine with my other hobby of golfing. As it’s on a golf resort, I love to get out for some winter sun and away from some of the horrible weather that we have in Scotland. I am also on the board of the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce and love helping where I can.
What’s one bit of advice you have received that still resonates with you?
“Good service breeds good sales” which was a favourite saying of Jimmy Graham who founded Graham Pest Control. Something I still live by today, always trying to provide the best level of service possible and deal with people how you would expect to be dealt with.
What is your personal definition of success?
I feel very grateful that I’ve had some wonderful opportunities in life, but probably when I’ve felt most successful is seeing how we’ve created many jobs and opportunities for others. Being able to give back and help others is how I would define success.
If you could go back and give your younger self some words of wisdom what would they be?
Oh, definitely “trust the process”. When times are tough it feels easy just to give up, but perseverance pays off. I’ve had to remind myself of that many times when things never seemed to be going to plan! While the outcome might seem different than you expected, the journey to get there should always be a learning experience.
