Possible meets.... Barry Stuart of MKM Building Supplies (Perth)
Our latest guest is a very well known face in the Perth area and chances are, if you have bumped into him, there will been a smile on his face too. That's just the way he is. Whilst we are in the business of selling homes, he is in the business of helping people (and their contractors) to build their dream home or take care of a whole range of internal and external projects and improvements. It's no surprise that his sound business head and positive outlook have helped his branch go from strength to strength in the local area.
In this latest interview, Possible meets Barry Stuart of MKM Building Supplies in Perth.
Can you tell us a bit about your business?
MKM Perth are one of the largest Timber, Joinery, Building, Roofing, Landscaping, Fencing and Plumbers Merchant in Scotland, supplying all trades and DIY with a huge range of products. We have supported many local community gardens and nursery projects as being a part of the community is very important to us. We take huge pride in what we do and make sure we look after our prized assets, our staff and our customers, whom without we would have nothing! Expertise, service and great team spirit is what we’re best at.
How was 2020 for you professionally and personally?
2020 well; a rollercoaster of epic proportions! Having to close down a business you have worked 9 years to build up was hard but we were then asked to re-open to help the councils for emergency call outs, joiners on police call-outs and supplying manpower and materials to build the COVID testing centre at the PRI this was the lift we needed. It was an emotionally and physically draining time, but luckily the amazing team we have stuck together and pulled us through.
Tell us about the first time you ever moved out of your family home and rented/bought your first property?
I left home at 24 and decided to buy a house with my brother to get on the property ladder. We bought a 4 bedroom house in Perth and sold it 5 years later making a great profit which then allowed me to have a good deposit and then got the itch to continue buying and selling.
Which parts of Perthshire have you lived in and are there any that you liked the most?
I spent a few years living in Balbeggie when we had the opportunity build our own house, Gary actually sold it for us for well over the asking price, but most of my life has been in Perth which Is a great place to live. I now reside in Cherrybank the area that offers everything. Sometimes you can forget what a stunning area Perth and the surroundings are until you go to other places. We are lucky to live where we do.
What’s your favourite room in your home and why?
Recently we renovated our house in Perth and built a little snug for tv and chilling out but the main work and favourite was creating an stunning open living space with a large living area rolling into our kitchen/dining room and bi-fold patio doors bringing the garden into direct play with the new space created.
In your opinion, what is it that makes a house a home?
Family, having my family around me is the most important thing, a happy family is a happy home 😊
Why do you think Perthshire is such a popular location for buyers from all over parts of Scotland and the UK?
Perthshire has everything without the big city stress. If you need to commute or just fancy a shopping spree, the bigger cities are an hour away but Perth has great little restaurants and cafes and bars and within a few minutes in any direction you are basking in beautiful Perthshire’s’ stunning countryside. Also looking at prices from around the UK Perthshire is very affordable, anyone who lives here should consider themselves privileged.
If you could have your dream home, anywhere in the world, where would it be and tell us a bit about what it might have in it and look like?
I actually like where I stay however maybe in later life I would love a villa all open-plan with a large pool to relax. Maybe Florida or somewhere hot but not too far from the hustle and bustle.
